Each day we lose plenty of strands of hair – 20 strands, 50 strands, or even a hundred strands. And more often than not, we do not notice it.
A total bad hair day is not really a day with head full of frizzy and untamed hair – but in reality, is a day with head of thinning hair, or worse, a head without hair at all.
This can really be extremely embarrassing (much more so for the ladies), and surely, no one would ever want this to happen to them.
Thus, a lot of us are trying to find ways in order to prevent such an unfortunate bad hair day to ever happen to us.
But before we go and look for a variety of hair loss remedies, natural or artificial, we need to find out what are the main causes of hair loss first.
What causes hair loss?
This is the question that most of us would ask. First, we need to know that the human hormones are the ones that make the hair grow and develop during the stage of puberty.
The male hormone testosterone is the one responsible for growing beards, hair on chest, legs, and in the armpits. On the other hand, the female hormone estrogen generally prevents the growth of hair on the chin and other body parts such as belly and chest, and makes the hair grow on the head instead. Sometimes, some women may experience signs of hair loss or thinning of hair when their estrogen levels drop. Thus, treatment with estrogen has becomes successful in restoring hair growth and stopping of hair loss.
There are various possible causes of hair loss that people must consider to try to prevent; and some of these causes are the following:
1. Stress. This is exactly one of the most common causes that is difficult to prevent – as stress is almost every where and a part of most people’s daily lives. Physical or mental stress may cause temporary hair loss. If a person experienced a really stressful event, hair loss, temporary or not, may occur 2 to 3 months after. This is because the hair follicles enter the telogen phase prematurely, which may cause them to stop growing new strands of hair, and sometimes, shed the other strands of hairs. Often, the hair loss will stop completely and hair start to grow again once the person has recovered from such stress.
2. Skin disease. There are some skin diseases, such as psoriasis, which may cause hair loss, but which may be temporary as well. Once the skin problem is treated, the hair is expected to grow once again.
3. Pregnancy and Child Birth. Some pregnant women, including those who have just given birth to their babies, are prone to temporary hair loss – especially after the delivery. This is usually caused by the raised level of estrogen when these woman is pregnant. Thus, this stops their natural hair growth cycle. After the delivery, the estrogen level drops again, and so the hair growth cycle is expected to resume.
4. Drugs and treatments. There are plenty of drugs that can cause hair loss, and some medications and treatments as well, such as chemotherapy.
5. Aging. The risk of hair loss increases with age. Older hair becomes more thin and fine, thus this type of hair is prone to damage and loss as well.
6. Menopause. After menopause, thinning of hair may become more pronounced and obvious.
The above causes are just a few of the many reasons behind hair loss. Now the next question that we need to ask is, how do we prevent hair loss?
